How to Prepare for a Virtual Ride
Essential tips to get your gear, tech, and mindset ready for your next indoor challenge.
Virtual cycling events have taken the world by storm, offering athletes the flexibility to compete from anywhere. However, riding virtually still requires proper preparation to ensure a smooth, competitive, and enjoyable experience.
1. Setup Your Equipment
Ensure your bike is cleanly mounted to your indoor trainer. Check your tire pressure if you're using a wheel-on trainer, and guarantee that your chain is properly lubricated to minimize noise and maximize power transfer.
2. Test the Tech
Nothing ruins a virtual ride faster than a disconnected sensor. Before the event, verify that your heart rate monitor, power meter, and cadence sensors are actively communicating with your tracking app (like Strava or Zwift).
- Charge all batteries the night before.
- Update your tracking applications to the latest software version.
- Ensure your Wi-Fi or cellular connection is stable in your pain cave.
3. Hydration and Nutrition
Indoor riding often makes you sweat significantly more than outdoor riding because there is no natural wind to cool you down. Setup a powerful fan directly in front of you. Keep at least two large water bottles within arm's reach, and have your energy gels or snacks pre-opened or easily accessible.
With these steps completed, all that is left is to hop on the saddle and crush your goals!
